Jammers Show Their Bouncebackability

Maldon & Tiptree bounced back from last week’s cup disappointment to record a comfortable 2-0 win over Brightlingsea Regent on Sunday.

Goals in either half from Amy Yeldham and Ellie Jones secured all three points at North Road.

While the hosts were the first to register an attempt on goal through Katie Bruce, it was a game The Jammers dominated for large spells.

An early corner from Erin Cheyne just missed the head of Jazz Cox at the far post after her initial shot was deflected wide.

Maldon quickly found their groove and chances were being created with increasing regularity.

A second corner from Cheyne found a Maldon head, but Brightlingsea cleared off the line.

Amy Yeldham, Abby Caldon, Libby Keeler and Bec Gallacher all went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock with twenty minutes gone.

The pressure finally told as Yeldham bagged the opener. Yeldham intercepted a loose pass from Jessica Harrald in the box and turned brilliantly between the two centre backs to coolly slot past Mia Cuppelditch.

Regent nearly equalised just minutes later when Sara Smith-Walter produced a great shot on the turn that went just wide.

Maldon reasserted themselves on proceedings and finished the half strong, but were unable to add to their lead. Jazz Cox and Ellie Jones both went close, but the visitors had to settle for a solitary goal at half-time.

It was more of the same in the second half as Maldon stepped up the pressure looking to kill the game off.

Jones had the ball in the net five minutes after the restart, but her celebrations were cut short by the offside flag.

Cuppelditch was called upon shortly after to deny Brooke Wright and then again to tip away Cheyne’s cross.

Jones had the ball in the net again on fifty-five minutes, but was again denied by the flag, before an increasingly overworked Cuppleditch thwarted her with a quick double save. The loose ball fell to Cox, but she fired into the side netting.

Gallacher smashed the crossbar with an hour gone before Cox was on the wrong end of the offside flag to rule her goal out. 

If you’re playing along at home, that was the third Jammers goal to fall foul of the flag.

Two minutes later, Jones had the ball in the net again and this time, the flag stayed down. She timed her run perfectly to latch onto Chloe Rylett’s through ball and lift superbly over Cuppelditch.

That was it for the goalscoring as Maldon created half chances, but were unable to add to their tally.

That win, coupled with Leigh’s draw against Brentwood sees The Jammers five points behind the league leaders but with two games in hand.

The two sides meet on Sunday at the Drewitt-Barlow Stadium for an absolutely massive match that will define both side’s seasons.
