Our History
From the 2010 amalgamation to FA Cup history, promotion battles, a league title and the fight to secure the club's future. This is the story of the Jammers.
2009 — TODAY
From two clubs to one
In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town while still running Tiptree United. Both clubs played their home games at Park Drive during the 2009/10 season under a ground-share arrangement. In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town and Tiptree United amalgamated to form Maldon & Tiptree Football Club.
2009
The road to a new club
Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham and installed Alan Brockhouse as chairman. Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager.
Wallington had previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 to 2007, achieving promotion in 2005/06 through the play-offs, before later guiding Tiptree United to the Eastern Counties Division One title in 2007/08.
2010
Maldon & Tiptree FC is formed
In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town and Tiptree United amalgamated to form Maldon & Tiptree Football Club under the ownership of Ed Garty.
Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, with their final fixture ending in a 3–1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took Maldon Town's place in the Isthmian Division One North.
Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed joint managers following Colin Wallington's retirement. The new club finished its first season eighth with 63 points.
2011 — 2013
Change, then a promotion push
King and Knight left their roles in November 2011. Former Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed caretaker manager and remained in charge until the end of the season.
Terry Spillane arrived ahead of the 2012/13 campaign. Maldon enjoyed an unbeaten start, eventually reaching the play-off final. The Jammers led Thamesmead Town by two goals before being pegged back and losing the final on penalties.
2014 — 2015
The Jammers are born
During the 2014/15 season, Media Officer Richard Buckby ran a competition asking supporters to choose a club nickname.
The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers were put to a public vote. The vote was featured on TalkSport, with The Jammers receiving more than 50% and becoming the club's new nickname.
2015 — 2018
Colchester links and Horlock's first spell
The club developed close ties with Colchester United, with former Ipswich Town midfielder David Wright appointed First Team Manager. Wright later left to become Assistant Manager at Colchester United.
Steve Ball followed before former Manchester City midfielder Kevin Horlock was appointed ahead of 2016/17. The Jammers spent much of that season at the top of the table, finished second and reached the play-off final, losing 1–0 to Thurrock.
2018 — 2019
Wayne Brown and another play-off final
Former Colchester United defender Wayne Brown replaced Kevin Horlock. In Brown's first season in charge, Maldon finished second and reached the play-off final.
Local rivals Heybridge Swifts denied the Jammers promotion, winning the final on penalties.
2019 · FA CUP HISTORY
A season to remember
Maldon & Tiptree reached the First Round proper of the Emirates FA Cup and beat League Two side Leyton Orient away from home. More than 600 Jammers supporters travelled, with goals from Danny Parish and Jorome Slew securing a famous victory.
In the Second Round, Maldon hosted Newport County live on national television. The League Two side won 1–0 with a stoppage-time goal in front of a club-record crowd of 1,876.
2019 — 2021
Two seasons cut short
The Jammers were top of the Isthmian Division One North, 13 points clear with four games in hand, when the 2019/20 season was abandoned because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Results were expunged and no promotion or relegation took place.
The 2020/21 season was also terminated. Before it ended, Maldon reached the FA Cup First Round for a second successive season, losing 1–0 to Morecambe, and recorded the club's longest FA Trophy run before defeat to Gloucester City.
2020 — 2022
Ownership and leadership changes
In October 2020, owner and chairman Ed Garty stood down after ten years at the helm. Ron Dangerfield became chairman and Richard Cowling took ownership of the football club.
Wayne Brown later became interim Head Coach at Colchester United, with Paul Abrahams taking over at Maldon. Brown left permanently in May 2022 after 141 games in charge and a recorded win percentage of 68%.
2022 — 2025
A period of managerial change
Paul Abrahams' permanent spell ended in September 2022. Adam Flint followed, before former England manager Peter Taylor took charge and guided the Jammers away from relegation.
Further changes followed through 2023 and 2024, with Liam Bailey, Jamie Cureton, David Huzzey and Brett Munyard all taking charge at different stages. Liam Bailey returned as interim Head Coach until the end of the 2024/25 season.
2025
The club is sold
In 2025, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club was sold, bringing Richard Cowling's tenure as owner to an end.
Kevin Horlock returned for a second spell as First Team Manager, Mitchell Cowling moved to Sporting Director and the club underwent a rebrand with a new badge introduced.
2025 — 2026 · CHAMPIONS
A historic season
The men's First Team reached the First Round of the Emirates FA Cup and were handed a televised away fixture against Port Vale, taking the lead before eventually losing to the League One side.
The Women's side, managed by Jody Buckley, won its league title. The men's side were crowned champions of the Isthmian Division One North on goal difference, lifting the title on the final day away at Walthamstow and securing the club's first season at Step 3.
SUMMER 2026
The club's toughest summer
The summer of 2026 became the most testing period in the club's 16-year history, with Maldon & Tiptree on the verge of liquidation.
Kevin Horlock and Jody Buckley departed Park Drive. Mark Hawkes was appointed manager, while the Women's team did not enter a league for the 2026/27 season.
18 SEPTEMBER 2026
A new chapter
Maldon & Tiptree avoided liquidation on 18 September 2026 and were acquired by a new consortium led by Jamil Frofder and his business partners.
Soon after their arrival, Mark Hawkes departed with the club mid-table in the Isthmian Premier League.
