Marvel-lous Jammers Overcome Mildenhall’s Iron Man
Maldon & Tiptree continue to set the pace in the Isthmian North with a hard fought win over Mildenhall Town.
Following Monday’s win over neighbours Heybridge, it was another team in the relegation mire visiting the Drewitt-Barlow Stadium.
The Jammers dominated large spells of the game and looked to set the pace from the off with Freddie Sears forcing a smart early save from Mildenhall keeper Finlay Iron.
George Chenery headed over for the visitors before Mikey Faulkner curled over the Mildenhall bar as both sides traded half-chances.
Sears did have the ball in the net with ten minutes to go until the break, but that was ruled out by the offside flag.
Iron was soon called on again to repel Ross Wall’s header, but Maldon didn’t have to wait too much longer to break the deadlock.
Jack Cawley’s long, raking pass forward was flicked on by Wall into the path of Malachi Napa and his unerring strike found the far post to give Maldon the lead.
Kevin Horlock’s side might’ve been further ahead heading into the break, but Iron saved well from Faulkner before Louis Dunne dragged an effort just past the post.
Into the second half and there was no let up in the Maldon domination. Straight from kick off, Sears was put through on goal. Again, Mildenhall’s very own Iron Man was there to thwart the Jammers striker.
Persistence eventually paid off for Sears, but Iron so nearly kept it out in miraculous circumstances.
Can James clipped a ball to Wall at the back post, with a combination of Iron and Ed Tassell somehow blocked the ball on the line. The rebound fell to Sears who poked the ball goalwards, with Iron looking like he’d reproduced that David Seaman save to somehow claw the ball away.
Unfortunately for the Mildenhall shot-stopper, his intervention couldn’t stop the ball from just about crossing the line and Sears at last had found a way through.
The two-goal buffer didn’t last for long however, as Chenery was on hand to slot home from close range when Maldon failed to deal with a freekick.
Undeterred, the blue and white swarm continued to pour forward. Napa should’ve doubled his tally with twenty minutes left, but blasted well over from Dunne’s cutback.
But for Iron, this could’ve been a real pasting. With fifteen minutes left, he produced the save of the afternoon, diving full stretch to claw Wall’s towering heading onto the post.
Dylan Williams eventually put the seal on the win with a sweetly struck volley from Wall’s knock down.
The pace and power was too much even for the in-form goalkeeper to do anything about.
That win keeps The Jammers just ahead of Felixstowe on goal difference with a double header against Gorleston to come. First up, it’s a trip to Norfolk on Wednesday night with Maldon looking to make the most of their game in hand.
