Jammers Reined In At Newmarket

Maldon & Tiptree women suffered their first competitive defeat as they were beaten 3-1 by Newmarket Town in the First Round of the Isthmian League Cup last Tuesday (2nd October). With two league wins in their opening two games under their belt, Jody Buckley’s side were keen to test themselves against Tier 6 opposition.Â
The hosts started well and applied the early pressure, but it was the Jammers who had the first clear look at goal. Amy Day’s ball over the top found Ellie Jones. She timed her run to perfection to beat the offside trap, but scuffed her shot into the hands of the goalkeeper.
Newmarket took the lead with 22 minutes gone. A turnover on the halfway line saw Niamh Bridgeman emerge with the ball. She set Emilia Reinhardt away who finished high above Jess Balbi. Maldon responded well with Stef Paci testing Dom Szary in the Newmarket goal before halftime.Â
The Jammers found an equaliser early in the second half when Amy Yeldham showed great strength and tenacity to win the ball from Balbi’s goal kick. Her through ball was tempting enough for Szary to come charging out of her box to try and clear, but the loose ball fell to Amy Jacobs who lifted home from all of 35 yards.
Katie Walker’s effort from the edge of the Maldon box restored Newmarket’s lead with 25 minutes left as she curled home into the top corner. Maldon set about levelling the game for a second time and had an effort cleared off the line. Danni Hindley headed wide as Maldon kept up the pressure.Â
With the game ticking towards 90 minutes, Jones looked to be through on goal. She was taken out by a retreating Newmarket defender, but the Maldon appeals fell on deaf ears as the referee waved play on.
Moments later, Walker wrapped up the tie for Newmarket with her second of the evening.
Next up for Maldon is a trip to Harlow to take on Frontiers Ladies this coming Sunday 12th October. Â
